Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner in order for them to be able to survive. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. She quit the institution she was in just two years later to pursue acting as a profession. The path she chose wasn't without its challenges. In New York, her first task was to pose stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit her job and moved back to Boston. She was an usherette during the day and then performed at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. She studied drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
